Hindi Cinema in 2024: From Pushpa 2 to Laapataa Ladies

The year 2024 was a mixed bag for Hindi cinema, as a few movies shone while others tanked. The year also clearly had a vivid display of alliteration ranging from the massive success of Pushpa 2 to surprise hits like Stree 2 and Laapataa Ladies, with plenty of creativity and repetition in between. Here’s a look at the highs and lows of 2024 in Hindi cinema.

Hindi Cinema’s Best to Worst in 2024: From Pushpa 2 to Stree 2 to Laapataa Ladies

Pushpa 2: The Wildfire

Pushpa 2: The Wildfire came with huge expectations after the runaway success of the first film. The film, featuring Allu Arjun, Fahadh Faasil, and Rashmika Mandanna, did not disappoint with its over-the-top visuals, great action scenes, and riveting performances. The film went on to become a pan-India phenomenon, accumulating substantial box-office numbers across Hindi belts. Its larger-than-life characters and explosive third act have made it a record-breaking blockbuster.

Stree 2

Stree 2 became one of the hit surprises of 2024. Starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, this horror-comedy sequel mixed supernatural elements with humor and was a box-office hit. Its original approach to the horror-comedy genre, along with its alluring performances, set it apart in a year filled with formula movies.

Laapataa Ladies

Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, follows two brides, swapped at birth, on a self-discovery journey. With inspiring themes and lead performances by Nitanshi Goel and Pratibha Ranta, it also felt like a breath of fresh air from the usual stuff served at Bollywood, packing a heartwarming punch.

Chamkila

Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali, tells the story of the iconic Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. Diljit Dosanjh as Chamkila and Parineeti Chopra as Chamkila’s partner won over audiences. It was Channa Mereya who captured the hearts of the audience in 2024, for its emotional depth and for exploring Chamkila’s struggles.

Bollywood’s Struggles in 2024

While the success of Pushpa 2 was significant, many Bollywood films flopped in 2024. Several high-profile films including Fighter, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and Maidaan fell flat at the box office. The reliance on formulaic narratives and predictable action sequences didn’t resonate with viewers. Not even sequels such as Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 could reignite the same magic, attempting nothing new and losing viewers’ attention.
