Helldivers 2 players on PC can rejoice!
PlayStation has reversed course on its controversial policy that would have required mandatory linking of a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play the game.
This decision follows a weekend of intense player backlash, which has led to review bombing and criticism spreading from Sony’s titles on Steam.
A Storm of Discontent
Immediately, outrage broke out when it was announced that a PSN account would be required to link with Helldivers 2 on the PC.
This policy, in particular for a game played primarily on the Steam platform, was deemed to be unnecessary and annoying by players.
This frustration manifested as a wave of negative reviews, dropping the game’s overall Steam rating from “Mostly Positive” to “Overwhelmingly Negative.” The anger wasn’t confined to Helldivers 2, with negative reviews also appearing on other PlayStation-published games on Steam.
Facing the Downpour
The negative reaction had a significant impact. Helldivers 2’s CEO, Johan Pilestedt, acknowledged the situation on social media, expressing his regret and frustration.
He admitted that the communication regarding the PSN account requirement was mishandled and took responsibility for not properly informing players. Pilestedt also revealed that disabling account linking at launch was his decision, aiming to prioritize immediate gameplay access. However, he acknowledged the lack of transparency surrounding this decision.
Sunshine Returns: PSN Account Linking Cancelled
Thankfully, PlayStation listened to the player protest. On their official account, they confirmed that the mandatory PSN account linking update for Helldivers 2 would not be implemented.
They emphasized that player feedback was invaluable and expressed their commitment to finding better solutions for PC players. This announcement was met with relief and hope from the Helldivers 2 community.
Many fans expressed their desire for future PlayStation PC titles to avoid similar requirements. Additionally, there was an outpouring of support for Arrowhead Studios, acknowledging they were caught in the crossfire and fulfilling their contractual obligations.
Helldivers 2: Back to the Mission
With the PSN account linking debacle behind them, the focus can now shift back to the game itself. One of the most successful games in 2024 was Helldivers 2, which has been praised for its unique approach to live service story telling.
The strong foundation of the game is highlighted by this critical and commercial success, estimated at 8 million units sold by March 2024. The cooperation and strategic depth offered by Helldivers 2 will continue to be enjoyed by players as long as the issue is resolved.
Looking Ahead: A Lesson Learned
The Helldivers 2 PSN account linking saga serves as a valuable lesson in communication and player relations. It underlines the importance for developers and publishers to communicate clearly and openly.
In addition, the power of the players’ voices to shape the gaming experience is demonstrated. As the industry continues to evolve, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering trust and open communication between developers, publishers, and players.
