The world of football sponsorship is witnessing a seismic shift. Heineken has announced that its partnership with the Champions League is coming to an end as of August 2027. After a partnership of 30 years, this is an emotional moment for the Dutch brewing giant. The decision marks the end of one of the most iconic and enduring brand partnerships in European football history.

A Legacy That Defined UCL Nights

The longstanding alliance started in 1994 with the brand Amstel and moved to Heineken in 2005. For three decades, the green branding and signature red star have been fixtures of European football nights. UEFA and the Heineken company spent the last 30 years growing the competition together beyond its European home, reaching over 2.5 billion viewers around the world.

The partnership was set to take the longstanding relationship to 33 years by the time the deal reached its conclusion in 2027. Heineken supported the global growth of the competition for decades through cross-market activations like the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour presented by Heineken. The tour took the most iconic trophy in club football to over 30 countries around the world to meet fans in person.

Why Heineken Is Walking Away

“After a partnership of 30 years, this is of course an emotional moment for us. We’ve made the strategic choice to focus our sponsorships on platforms where spend is proportionate to value creation, ensuring return on investment.” Heineken stated it still has two more years to maximize the Champions League sponsorship and keep the association with the Heineken brand in people’s minds for years to come, describing it as “a great ride.” Despite its iconic sponsorship legacy, Heineken has come under mounting pressure from investors to accelerate growth and improve cost efficiency. The company will now redirect its sports marketing investments toward other properties.

Heineken’s Future Sports Investments

Heineken confirmed it will continue as a proud partner of F1, and the company has secured a new partnership with Premier Padel. It also recently extended its deal with the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the 2025–2030 cycle.

AB InBev Set to Take Over

The world’s biggest brewer AB InBev is set to replace Heineken as the official beer sponsor of the Champions League. UC3, a joint venture between UEFA and European Football Clubs (EFC), entered into exclusive negotiations with Anheuser-Busch InBev for UEFA men’s club competition sponsorship. The deal would name AB InBev the global official beer partner for all UEFA men’s club competitions, including the UCL, from 2027 to 2033.

The deal is estimated to be worth €1.2 billion over the six seasons, approximately €200 million per season. Heineken has a reputation as one of the more lucrative Champions League deals, likely paying more than €100 million per season — meaning AB InBev’s offer represents a significant increase. AB InBev sealing a Champions League deal would add soccer’s prized club competition to its longstanding World Cup partnership with FIFA and a three-Olympics deal with the IOC that started last year in Paris and runs through the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games.

What This Means for UCL

The influential clubs group that rebranded as EFC was known to want a more dynamic commercial program and for Relevent to drive higher value deals that would help pay clubs more. The Champions League prize fund is almost €2.5 billion and is shared between the 36 Champions League teams. AB InBev, whose main global brands are Budweiser, Corona, Michelob Ultra, and Stella Artois, is a sponsor of FIFA’s Club World Cup tournament. The group is also sponsoring FIFA’s World Cup competition of national clubs in 2026 and has worked with the organiser for approaching 40 years.

The transition from Heineken to AB InBev represents more than just a change in logos on LED boards. It signals a new commercial era for the UCL, with higher sponsorship valuations and a fresh approach to fan engagement under the UC3 framework.
