Guarding Stars Netflix Rom-Com: Jared Padalecki & Leighton Meester’s Holiday Love Story Arrives Late 2026

Netflix is about to deliver the cozy holiday rom-com you didn’t know you needed. “Guarding Stars,” starring Jared Padalecki and Leighton Meester, is a fresh take on the romance-between-unlikely-pairs trope, and it’s shaping up to be one of the streaming giant’s most charming releases of the season. Filming wrapped in March 2026, and the movie is expected to premiere in late 2026.

Guarding Stars: Everything You Need to Know

Plot: Bodyguard Meets Charming Action Star

Here’s the setup: Hannah, an elite bodyguard, is tasked with protecting Jack, a charming action star who’s retreated to his family’s Montana ranch after a scandal left him wary of the public eye. When a stalker threatens Jack, Hannah must pose as his girlfriend rather than his bodyguard to keep his ailing mother from worrying.

What unfolds is a perfect storm of fake-dating tension, adorable family dynamics, and genuine connection. As the danger escalates and secrets surface, Hannah must decide whether to keep her heart locked down or risk it all for a man who might be far more than a client.

The beauty of this setup is the role reversal. In traditional bodyguard rom-coms, the female lead is typically the damsel. Here, Leighton Meester’s Hannah is the protector, the professional—and that’s what makes the romance even more compelling.

Why the Title Changed From “The Bodyguard”

The original adaptation couldn’t use the title “The Bodyguard” because of the well-known 1992 Kevin Costner film. Rather than settle for a generic alternative, the production team and Netflix held a Zoom call with Padalecki and Meester asking fans to suggest titles. The result? “Guarding Stars”—which is clever, romantic, and perfectly captures the film’s essence.

A Star-Studded Cast Bringing Holiday Magic

Beyond the leads, the ensemble is impressive. Andie MacDowell, Walker Hayes, Noah LaLonde, and Toby Sandeman round out the supporting cast. Andie MacDowell brings Hollywood gravitas, while country star Walker Hayes adds authenticity to the Montana ranch setting.

Director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum (Ginny & Georgia, Purple Hearts) is known for bringing heart and humor to her films—exactly what this rom-com needs.

Why This Adaptation Works

Katherine Center’s 2022 novel has massive appeal, especially on BookTok where readers obsess over engaging, character-driven stories. Director Allen has spoken about being inspired by the BookTok community, which bodes well for capturing the novel’s essence.

The film adaptation changes the setting from Texas (in the novel) to Montana, which adds a more scenic, winter-wonderland vibe perfect for the Christmas holidays.

According to romantic comedy film conventions on Wikipedia, successful films in this genre require genuine chemistry, witty banter, and characters the audience roots for. Based on Padalecki and Meester’s on-set rapport and the production team’s care in bringing this story to screen, “Guarding Stars” has all the ingredients for success.

What to Expect

This isn’t a typical Netflix holiday rom-com where romance overpowers plot. “Guarding Stars” promises genuine danger (the stalker storyline), emotional stakes (Jack’s complicated family dynamics), and authentic sparks between two people thrown into an impossible situation. The Montana setting adds beauty and isolation, perfect for a slow-burn romance.

With filming wrapped and post-production underway, Netflix is likely planning a late-November or early-December 2026 release to capitalize on holiday viewing habits.
