Grant Morrison Just Trashed Jason Momoa’s Lobo — And Fans Aren’t Happy

Comic book legend Grant Morrison rarely holds back, and his latest review of Supergirl proves it. While Milly Alcock’s performance earned praise, Morrison had brutal words for Jason Momoa’s long-awaited turn as Lobo — a casting choice most fans considered perfect on paper.

The Verdict From a DC Icon

Writing in his Xanaduum newsletter, Morrison called Momoa’s performance one of the worst he’d ever seen in a film, adding that it was baffling given how well-suited Momoa seemed for the role. He was far kinder to Alcock, saying she did a credible job as Kara Zor-El, and noted the film’s story collapsed by the second act.

That take matters because Morrison isn’t just a casual critic. He’s the writer behind All-Star Superman, Doom Patrol, Final Crisis, and The Green Lantern, and he co-created Damian Wayne — making him one of the most influential voices in modern comics.

A Surprising Reversal on Lanterns

Interestingly, Morrison had far warmer things to say about HBO’s Lanterns, praising Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre despite being one of the show’s harshest early critics before it premiered. That’s a notable shift for a writer with deep ties to Green Lantern lore, having co-written The Green Lantern comic series himself.

Lobo has a long, chaotic comic-book history dating back to 1983 that helps explain why fans expected so much from this casting — you can read more on Lobo’s Wikipedia page for background on the character’s origins.

Momoa had campaigned for the role for years before landing it, a journey TechnoSports covered in detail when the casting was first announced.

With Supergirl struggling at the box office and now facing criticism from one of DC’s own legends, the pressure is mounting on the DCU’s second chapter to prove its bigger swings are paying off.
