Google finally gave the Pixel Tablet its due at I/O 2023, releasing the price, features, and other details. You’d mistake the Pixel Tablet for a Nest Hub from which you can remove the screen right away. It does appear like that, which makes it even better because it is also powered by Android. But now that everything is official, we don’t have to worry about leaks.
The Pixel Tablet’s focal element is its display. It’s 11-inch in size, and yep, that’s the only display size available – no 12 or 13-inch possibilities. It’s also quite sharp, with a resolution of 2560×1600. Expect low refresh rates as well, but rounded corners for a more modern appearance.
Since Google is developing its own CPU for phones, it makes sense to include one in the Pixel Tablet as well.
It’s the Tensor G2 with Titan M2 for security – the same chip that prioritises AI over performance. However, given the greater form-factor of a tablet versus a phone, it would be interesting to see whether Google was able to squeeze more out of this technology.
Google will sell the tablet with two storage capacities: 128GB and 256GB. Both will include 8GB of RAM. This is somewhat disappointing because there is no mention of microSD expansion. If you intend to use this tablet as a full-fledged business ‘laptop,’ even the 256GB storage space may be insufficient.
Google promises that this tablet will last up to 12 hours while streaming video, which is a figure that doesn’t inspire much confidence. If it translates to at least 9 hours of battery life in real-world use, most people should be fine. And, because of Google’s software deception, that number will be far larger.
Google is launching the Pixel Tablet with a fingerprint sensor built into the power button, and thanks to the Titan M2 component of the Tensor G2 CPU, your biometrics will be safe and secure.
Because Chromecast is built right into the Pixel Tablet, you can use it as a display to cast your entertainment – no other tablet has this feature. It’s like having a little TV screen with fantastic speakers on your desk. In addition, Hub Mode turns your tablet into a digital photo frame, smart home controller, voice-activated assistant, and more.
