Google I/O 2025 Scheduled for May 20-21: Android 16, Gemini 2.0, and AI Advancements Expected
Google announced in a blog post that the two-day event will happen on Tuesday, May 20, and Wednesday, May 21. Now, a dedicated microsite has gone live with details about the event, along with a countdown timer and registration link. As is customary, the event will begin with a keynote address from Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, reviewing the company’s major hardware and software initiatives for the year.
The buyers of this product should begin at 10 AM PT (11:30 PM IST). Much of the attention will probably go to Android 16 and changes to Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini. We will likely also hear about the new version of Gemini 2.0 AI since Google announced Gemini 1.5 Pro at the I/O conference last year with support for a two-million-token context window. It also features top AI initiatives like Google AI Studio, open-source Gemma models, and NotebookLM, indicating upgrades in those aspects. But details to explain why the cause are still unknown.
Ahead of the event, Google has already released Beta 1 for Android 16 on supported Pixel devices. The update introduces a Live Updates feature, allowing real-time status tracking for activities like navigation, food delivery, or ride-sharing—similar to Apple’s Live Activities feature on iPhones. Additionally, Android 16 is bringing predictive back animations to the three-button navigation mode, a feature previously exclusive to gesture-based navigation with the swipe-back-and-hold action.
