We received a fresh and detailed look at Android 13 at Google I/O on Wednesday. The new operating system was unveiled in February, but it won’t be available until the fall. Expanded Material You personalizations, enhanced privacy and security controls, more RCS messaging support, a revised Google Wallet, and better connections with Chromebooks, wearables, TVs, vehicles, and smart home devices are all part of Android 12. With the new software, Android and Google’s enormous software ecosystem can compete with Apple’s extensive software and service portfolio.

For the first time, Google revealed the total number of Android phone activations, which will surpass 1 billion in 2021. According to Sameer Samat, vice president of product management for Android and Google Play, there are more than 3 billion active Android devices weekly.

These figures, combined with Samsung’s four-year commitment to major Android OS updates, place Google in a unique position. It must work with a wide range of devices, including old and new phones, tablets, and foldable. Fortunately, Android 13 demonstrates that Google is ready and willing to maintain its crown jewel OS adaptable and up to date while also providing Android phone owners with a more consistent experience across numerous devices. Improvements to current features and support for features in more countries are among the items Google highlighted.

Material You was one of the most noticeable improvements in Android 12. Android adjusts the appearance of your home screen and app icons based on the colours of your wallpaper image. Google is releasing prepared colour combinations for Android 13 for people who want something different.

System apps will no longer be the only ones with themed icons in Android 13. Themed icons are now available for all apps on your home screen thanks to a new setting in Settings.

Material You also help with media controls. The player window will change colour to match the album artwork when you’re listening to music. A new waveform progress bar moves in lockstep with the audio.

You can now select various default languages for different apps in the App Language Settings. Your bank app, for example, could be set to English while your messaging app is set to Hindi. This, like the cameras on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, is another example of Google’s software and design being more accessible and equitable.

You can limit which photographs and videos an app has access to in the Android Photo Picker, which was first introduced in iOS. Instead of giving an app access to your whole photo library, you can give it access to individual images.

According to Google, the average American household has 20 connected devices. Google unveiled its idea for how Android would interact better with your TV, automobiles, speakers, and laptops earlier this year. Fast pairing for setting up new devices with your phone, automatic audio switching between devices for your headphones, and copy-pasting between devices will all be supported in Android 13. Messages and other apps from your phone can also be streamed to your computer.

More devices from Bose, TCL, Sony, Vizio, and LG will be supported by Chromecast. Casting skills will also be extended to new items, such as Chromebooks and perhaps your car.

Spotify and Adidas have released new Wear OS apps. It will use haptic feedback to provide turn-by-turn guidance for riding and walking, similar to the Apple Watch.

The Google Play Store is getting a makeover. The app appears to be cleaner. The store is more user-friendly, and apps are easier to locate.
