J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated film has officially been titled The Great Beyond, according to a Writers Guild of America listing. The project is described as a dramatic action-adventure film and stars Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey and Samuel L. Jackson. The title reveal comes as a significant development for one of cinema’s most secretive productions, which has been operating under the working title Ghostwriter.

In August 2024, Jenna Ortega joined the cast in an undisclosed role with Powell confirmed to star, while in November Emma Mackey joined with Samuel L. Jackson entering talks, and in April 2025, Jackson was confirmed to star in the film.

J.J. Abrams’ Return to Directing

The Great Beyond marks Abrams’ first directorial film in over six years since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Abrams signed a lucrative overall deal with Warner Bros. worth $250 million, although to date he doesn’t seem to have actually turned any water into wine for the studio.

Abrams has been seen as one of the most prominent creators and filmmakers in TV and cinema, having created Lost and Fringe, directed Star Trek, Super 8, and the Star Wars films The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. His return to directing represents a significant moment for audiences and the industry alike.

Industry Reception and Expectations

The combination of a star-studded cast and J.J. Abrams’ directorial return has generated considerable anticipation. The Great Beyond seems to have scored a home run by enlisting Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell in the lead roles, with both stars currently riding high waves of success, and teaming them up for the same movie could continue that success.

The addition of veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson and rising talent Emma Mackey further strengthens the ensemble, positioning the film as a major event picture. However, audiences may be more skeptical of Abrams since his last directorial effort was the widely disliked Star Wars entry, suggesting the film carries both high expectations and potential skepticism.

Production Status and Timeline

The film is currently in post-production following the completion of principal photography across multiple international locations. The timing of title reveal and the film’s current production stage suggest that release announcements may be forthcoming in the near future.

With casting complete, filming wrapped, and post-production underway, The Great Beyond is progressing toward its theatrical presentation. The project’s scale, coupled with its mysterious narrative approach, positions it as one of 2026’s most intriguing anticipated releases.
