What’s the Story?
The Yorozuya crew heads into Yoshiwara, an underground red-light district cut off from sunlight and law. Gintoki agrees to help a young pickpocket named Seita find his mother, believed to be the district’s top courtesan, Hinowa. Standing in their way is Housen, the ruthless “Night King” of the Yato clan, who rules Yoshiwara with an iron grip. To grant a child’s simple wish, Gintoki must take on a tyrant and free an entire district from darkness.
Why It’s Worth Streaming
This film remakes episodes 139–146 of the original anime, giving longtime fans a chance to revisit one of Gintama’s most fan-favorite arcs with modern animation. On its opening weekend in Japan, the movie earned $2.64 million and ranked second at the box office — a solid showing for a franchise film built primarily for existing fans.
The returning voice cast includes Tomokazu Sugita as Gintoki and Rie Kugimiya as Kagura, both series veterans lending consistency to a franchise now spanning over two decades since Gintama first debuted as a manga.
