Not every Bollywood film gets a thunderous opening — and Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 is the latest reminder of just how tough the theatrical market has gotten for mid-budget romantic comedies without a major star backing. The numbers are in, and they’re hard to sugarcoat.

Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 Day 1 Box Office: The Numbers

Ginny Wedss Sunny 2, starring Avinash Tiwary and Medha Shankr in the lead roles and directed by Prasshant Jha, collected in the vicinity of Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh on its opening day at the Indian box office — a poor start by any measure.

What Went Wrong?

The dull opening was already expected, as the film couldn’t impress audiences with its promotional assets — including the trailer and songs — which would have helped it take a reasonable start. The movie opened to mixed-bag reactions among the audience, which must be concerning for the makers.

In an era where OTT alternatives are just a click away, a romantic drama with limited promotional buzz simply can’t afford a lukewarm first impression at the box office. Word of mouth would have been the film’s only real lifeline — and early audience response suggests it may not provide enough momentum.

The film now needs to show miraculous growth over the weekend to reach a respectable total.

What Is Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 About?

Ginny Wedss Sunny 2 is the spiritual sequel of the 2020 release Ginny Weds Sunny, which starred Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam. The original film was a direct-to-OTT release and itself met with mixed reception.

The sequel narrates how the life of a tough professional wrestler changes after he crosses paths with a zesty young woman. Besides Avinash Tiwary and Medha Shankr, the film also stars Lillete Dubey, Sudhir Pandey, Govind Namdev, Gopi Bhalla, Nayani Dixit, Vishwanath Chatterjee, Rohit Chaudhary, and others.

The Bigger Picture for Bollywood Romcoms

Ginny Wedss Sunny 2‘s opening is symptomatic of a larger challenge facing mid-tier Bollywood productions. With Dhurandhar: The Revenge still drawing crowds in its sixth weekend and Bhooth Bangla holding steady, smaller releases are being crowded out of meaningful screen space and audience mindshare. Unless word of mouth turns dramatically positive over Saturday and Sunday, a quick OTT transition seems the most likely trajectory for this one.
