Game Over: Netflix Just Pulled The Plug On David Fincher’s Squid Game

For years, fans held onto one tantalizing rumor: an English-language “Squid Game” directed by David Fincher. That dream just died quietly, and honestly, it’s a little heartbreaking for anyone who’d been tracking this project since 2023.

According to reports, Netflix has officially shelved the American spin-off, which had been in development under the working title “Heckler.” No dramatic press release, no farewell tweet — just sources confirming the project is dead.

What Exactly Got Cancelled

The show was conceived as a fresh, US-set story within the “Squid Game” universe rather than a straight remake of the original Korean series. David Fincher, known for “Fight Club,” “Zodiac,” and Netflix hits like “Mindhunter” and “The Killer,” was attached to direct. Dennis Kelly, creator of the British series “Utopia,” had been brought on to write the script. Interestingly, despite the American framing, production was reportedly being considered in the United Kingdom.

Squid Game: What We Know

Why Did Netflix Walk Away?

A few threads seem to have converged here. Reports point to executive changes at Netflix and a broader shift in how the streamer wants to expand the “Squid Game” universe — leaning toward regionally localized adaptations (think something closer to how “Money Heist” spun into different versions) rather than one giant English-language flagship series.

Fincher’s own schedule didn’t help either. He’s since moved on to other Netflix projects, including “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” starring Brad Pitt, which reportedly pulled his attention away as Heckler lost momentum behind the scenes.

What About Cate Blanchett’s Cameo?

Eagle-eyed fans thought they’d cracked the code when Cate Blanchett showed up as a mysterious American recruiter playing ddakji in Los Angeles during the Season 3 finale. Naturally, everyone assumed it was a backdoor tease for Fincher’s American spin-off. Turns out, that theory doesn’t hold up — sources say Blanchett was never involved with Heckler, and the project wasn’t built around her character at all.

Is Squid Game’s American Future Really Over?

Not entirely. While this particular version is dead, Netflix hasn’t abandoned expanding the franchise globally. Reports suggest the streamer is exploring localized versions in other countries, possibly including France and Norway, following a model similar to other successful international IP expansions. For more on how global franchises adapt across markets, Wikipedia’s overview of localization in media offers useful context on why streamers increasingly favor this approach over one-size-fits-all English adaptations.

The Bigger Picture

“Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had previously expressed excitement about other creators putting their own spin on the franchise, and it seems Netflix is taking that literally — just not with Fincher leading the charge. For fans hoping to see Gi-hun’s world reimagined stateside, this is a disappointing turn, but the franchise clearly isn’t finished expanding.
