It arrived without fanfare. It disappeared even faster. The gabby petito movie — Lifetime’s dramatization of one of America’s most talked-about missing persons cases — landed on Netflix on August 27, 2025, only to be pulled within the same day, leaving thousands of viewers mid-watch and with plenty of unanswered questions.
Here’s the full story of what happened, and why it matters.

What Is the Gabby Petito Movie About?
The film dramatizes the real-life disappearance and murder of Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old travel blogger who went missing during a cross-country van-life trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie in 2021. Her body was later discovered in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest. The case consumed American media and sparked major debates around missing persons coverage and the so-called “missing white woman syndrome.”
Skyler Samuels (Scream Queens) portrays Gabby, while Evan Hall plays Brian Laundrie and Thora Birch (American Beauty) appears as Gabby’s mother. The film premiered on Lifetime just a year after the real events — a timeline that drew intense criticism from viewers and Gabby’s family alike.
Why Was It Removed From Netflix So Quickly?
Netflix offered no official explanation for the removal. Viewers on Reddit noticed the film had vanished mid-stream, with the Netflix link simply redirecting to the homepage. Speculation pointed to licensing disputes or legal pressure, though nothing has been confirmed. This was the film’s first appearance on any SVOD platform since its Lifetime debut in 2022.
The controversy surrounding the Gabby Petito movie dates back to its initial announcement — fans and family members criticised the speed of production, calling it exploitative and premature.
Notably, Netflix had already found massive success with the documentary series American Murder: Gabby Petito, which accumulated over 120.6 million viewing hours in the first half of 2025 and debuted at No. 1 globally.
