From NEET to Peak: Netflix’s 2027 J-Drama About Chasing an Impossible Love

Netflix is kicking off 2027 with one of its most absurd-yet-heartfelt premises yet — an eight-year shut-in vowing to win the heart of Japan’s biggest idol, all to keep a promise to his dying mother. Here’s everything confirmed so far about From NEET to Peak.

Netflix J-Drama: Overview

What’s the Story?

The drama follows Kanta Kakuhata, played by Wataru Ichinose, a man who has spent eight years as a recluse living entirely under his mother’s care, with no romantic experience to speak of. When she receives a terminal diagnosis, Kanta is overwhelmed with guilt over the burden he’s placed on her. In a quiet, painfully human moment, she confesses she once hoped he’d marry someone as beautiful as the idol on a nearby billboard — Mami Hamamiya, Japan’s most famous celebrity, played by Suzu Hirose.

Kanta responds with an outlandish promise: he will marry that very woman, and until he does, his mother isn’t allowed to die. What follows is a chaotic, deeply unlikely journey — first learning to simply leave the house, then to talk to people, and eventually attempting to get close to a woman who exists in a completely different world than his own.

The show plays with a familiar arc in Japanese storytelling, similar to the real-world social phenomenon of hikikomori — extreme social withdrawal — using it as the emotional starting point for a story about growth, connection, and reluctant self-reinvention.

Meet the Leads

Wataru Ichinose, known for his roles in Sanctuary and Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning, takes on Kanta’s transformation from isolated shut-in to determined romantic hopeful. Opposite him, Suzu Hirose — recently seen in Netflix’s The Human Vapor remake — steps into the role of the untouchable celebrity love interest, a dynamic that promises plenty of fish-out-of-water comedy alongside genuine emotional stakes.
