From Ben Affleck’s Kidnap Thriller to a Human-Battery K-Drama: Your Netflix Week Sorted

Some weeks Netflix serves a snack. This week it serves a buffet. A star-studded thriller, a seaside horror series, a Lorne Michaels documentary and a K-drama about a human battery pack all land between October 5 and 11. Here’s where to start.

The Five Must-Watch Picks

Animals (Friday, October 9). Ben Affleck plays a mayoral candidate whose campaign collapses when his son is kidnapped. Gillian Anderson plays his wife. Pushed to the edge, the couple cross every moral line to bring their son home. It’s an R-rated political thriller built to keep you tense.

Below (Thursday, October 8). Josh Hartnett leads this six-part supernatural limited series. A deadly creature starts terrorizing a remote coastal town, and the locals have to find out what’s in the water before it’s too late. It’s a bingeable pick for spooky season.

Lorne (Monday, October 5). Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville directs this documentary on Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels. Candid interviews with Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Maya Rudolph and Chris Rock make it a treat for anyone who grew up quoting SNL sketches.

Take Charge of My Heart (Friday, October 9). In this K-drama, a ruthless corporate heir survives on a failing artificial heart. He meets a struggling screenwriter who was struck by lightning as a child and has electricity running through her body. They strike a contract deal: he gives her the physical romance her script needs, since he’s the only person she can touch without shocking, and she becomes his human battery pack. It’s soapy and delightfully ridiculous.

Save Yourselves! (Saturday, October 10). A trendy, extremely online Brooklyn couple, played by Sunita Mani and John Reynolds, unplug from their phones for a week in a cabin. They have no idea an alien invasion has begun. It’s a funny indie take on millennial anxiety.

Ben Affleck: More Arrivals Worth Your Time

Other Oct 9 arrivals include Reporting Live, an Indian thriller about a reporter caught up in an illegal sand-mining racket, and Doctor X: Mafia in White, a weekly Korean medical drama. Netflix’s launch of the new season of Haunted Hotel and the film Lucky, a quirky desert indie about a 90-year-old atheist, also falls on that Friday.
