Free Netflix Is Back — Sort Of, And Only If You’ve Never Signed Up Before

Six years after quietly killing one of its most-loved perks, Netflix is dipping a toe back into free-trial waters.

Netflix has confirmed to What’s on Netflix that it is testing the reintroduction of free trials for the first time since the classic 30-day trial was phased out back in late 2019 and throughout 2020. The new trials are reportedly rolling out in select markets outside the US and UK, and are only available to people who have never signed up for Netflix before.

Why This Feels Like A Throwback

For years, the 30-day free trial was the default gateway into Netflix — the easiest way to get friends and family hooked before ever entering payment details. Its disappearance marked the end of an era, with Netflix instead leaning on flat-out paid sign-ups.

A Netflix spokesperson confirmed the current test, framing it simply: the company regularly experiments with promotions to help prospective members experience Netflix’s value before committing.

Netflix Never Really Stopped Experimenting

This isn’t Netflix’s first attempt at rethinking acquisition since axing free trials. In 2020, the company rolled out a “Watch Free” portal, putting select original movies and first episodes of hit shows in front of the paywall entirely, with no account required.

More recently, the company has leaned on major live events to hook new viewers. Earlier this year, Netflix picked up rights to the World Baseball Classic in Japan and paired the broadcast with a discounted first-month offer for Japanese subscribers — a targeted play on long-standing regional viewing habits.

The Bigger Picture

Netflix has crossed 325 million global subscribers, but continued growth means winning over holdouts who’ve simply never tried the service. A short trial lowers that barrier, letting undecided viewers sample a library ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 titles depending on region, plus Netflix’s growing push into games, podcasts, and YouTube-style content.

Once a trial ends, users can roll straight into any paid tier, including the budget-friendly Standard with Ads plan. As with all of Netflix’s A/B testing — including its recent website redesign experiments — the company will study the results before deciding whether to expand free trials more broadly.
