Kabaddi’s Evolution from Villages to Cities

During his visit, Sharma expressed happiness at witnessing UPKL’s growing scale and organization. He emphasized kabaddi’s deep-rooted history in India, describing it as a sport combining physical strength with strategic thinking that has existed for thousands of years.

Reflecting on the sport’s transformation, Sharma noted that kabaddi was traditionally a village game, but structured platforms like UPKL have helped evolve it into a city-based competitive sport. Such leagues provide athletes with professional environments, exposure, and clearer pathways to higher competition levels.

India’s Kabaddi Legacy

Sharma highlighted India’s consistent success at the Asian Games as reflection of the sport’s strong foundation in the country. This international dominance demonstrates kabaddi’s potential when proper infrastructure and competitive platforms support athlete development.

The former Deputy CM emphasized that organized leagues create structured opportunities crucial for maintaining and enhancing India’s position as a kabaddi powerhouse on the global stage.

Importance of Grassroots Development

Stressing the role of grassroots development, Sharma observed that platforms like UPKL help identify and nurture talent at early stages—essential for building strong, competitive national teams over time. Early talent identification through regional leagues ensures a steady pipeline of skilled players.

UPKL’s regional approach allows athletes from smaller cities and towns to showcase abilities without relocating to major metropolitan areas, democratizing access to professional sports careers.

Growing Relevance in Indian Sports

The felicitation and presence of senior public figures at the venue further underlined UPKL’s expanding relevance within India’s sporting ecosystem. The league continues strengthening its role in promoting kabaddi at both grassroots and competitive levels.

Such high-profile endorsements validate UPKL’s mission to professionalize kabaddi while maintaining connections to the sport’s traditional roots in Indian villages and communities.
