For All Mankind just delivered arguably its most emotionally gut-wrenching episode of Season 5, and the ending has left fans reeling. Episode 8, titled “Brave New World,” answered the burning question on every viewer’s lips: yes, Sergeant Ruiz is dead — and his death changes everything.

What Happened in the For All Mankind Episode 8 Ending?

Sergeant Ruiz dies in an explosion during the recon mission with Avery. After Avery and Ruiz found the explosives related to the growing insurgency on Mars, a sudden explosion destroys Ruiz’s space suit when a piece of metal hits him. Ruiz acted as a mentor for Avery, telling her she would be able to get over her traumatic experience caused by the death of her father.

When Avery regained consciousness, she found that shrapnel had punctured Sergeant Ruiz’s helmet, and he had died. Comic Basics

Ruiz had given Avery a push to get her out of harm’s way — and lost his life for his trouble. The final image of AJ, screaming inside her suit next to her dead sergeant — whose blood is splattered, suspended in thin air on the opposite side of his helmet — is tragic in a much deeper way given how much Ruiz had shared of himself and how much he had helped AJ.

Why Ruiz’s Death Is a Game-Changer?

His killing gives the M-6 nations additional justification to label the Sons and Daughters of Mars as a violent faction deserving punishment, and a military intervention to retake Happy Valley by force now becomes far more politically viable. The protesters may have acted in desperation, but the optics have shifted in the worst possible direction at the worst possible time. Comic Basics

In short, one death tips the entire balance of power — and that’s classic For All Mankind storytelling at its finest.

What’s Happening in the Bigger Picture?

Storyline	Status After Ep 8
Mars food supply	Only two weeks of reserves remain
Sons & Daughters of Mars	Under pressure; plan being formulated
M-6 multinational force	Heading to retake Goldilocks by force
Avery (AJ) Jarrett	Traumatized; psychological collapse looming
Kelly Baldwin & Titan crew	Safe — but transmission moment was a brief ray of hope

Irina is confident that President Korzhenko will be gone soon and the M-6 will dissolve due to growing dissatisfaction with the current regime. The new government would support Independent Mars — but for that, Miles and the Sons and Daughters of Mars will have to be in control of Happy Valley. If they fail and surrender, they’ll be arrested and likely dragged back to Earth. DM Talkies

Avery’s Devastating Arc

Avery “AJ” Jarrett — the now-grown-up 18-year-old Space Marine daughter of Danny and Amber Stevens — hits a real turning point in episode 8 after witnessing the death of Sergeant Manuel Ruiz. His death rattles Avery, leaving her literally screaming into the void after witnessing her partner die in such a brutal way. ScreenRant

Her story is a mirror of her father Danny’s tragic arc — the alternate history of this world repeating its generational trauma with heartbreaking precision.
