David Fincher does not make anything look ordinary. Alongside the first trailer, Netflix has now shared high-resolution IMAX stills from The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, and they say a lot about the film’s mood. Think Tarantino’s sunny Hollywood, run through Fincher’s shadows.

The Fincher Fingerprint

Note the palette. Sickly yellows, deep shadows and neon slicing through the dark give the film a dangerous edge that sets it apart from the first movie. Messerschmidt, who also shot Mank and Mindhunter, knows how to make grit look gorgeous, and IMAX should make it look even better.

Music: A Fincher Regular Returns

Reznor and Ross are scoring the film, their sixth collaboration with Fincher, according to No Film School. Their past work ranges from industrial dread to convincing 1940s swing, so a 1977 crime story gives them plenty to play with. The trailer already borrows a classic rock track, and it will be interesting to see how far the score leans into the period.

Why It Matters

Netflix rarely gives a film a full theatrical window before streaming. Two weeks in IMAX, followed by a holiday-season Netflix debut, shows how seriously the company is treating this one. If the stills are anything to go by, the big screen is where its visuals will land best.
