The Fairphone 5 is now available for pre-order through the company’s website. Even faster than I had expected! There is only one phone model available, and it costs €700/£620 instead of €580/£500 like the previous model.
It’s interesting that the Dutch phone manufacturer chose a Qualcomm QCM6490 as the chipset. That chipset was created for industrial and business uses. It should perform at a speed that is comparable to the Snapdragon 778G.
The manufacturer will ship the phone with Android 13 out of the box and at least 5 OS updates overall.
Fairphone 5 specifications
The new screen is an OLED display measuring 6.46″, which is marginally bigger than the 6.3″ panel on the Fairphone 4. It features a peak brightness of 880 nits, a 1,224 x 2,700 px resolution (20:9 aspect ratio), and a 90Hz refresh rate (the first HRR display from the firm). It has Gorilla Glass 5 (oleophobic layer, 0.7 mm thick).
The Fairphone 5 replaces the notch with a selfie camera with a punch-hole. A 50MP sensor is used in this camera as well as the two rear cameras. A Samsung JN1 sensor with a 1/2.76″ dimension and 0.64 m pixels, specifically used in the selfie camera, supports 4-in-1 binning. It allows video recording up to 4K at 30fps and has a 90° field of vision with the f/2.45 lens.
A 50 MP Sony IMX800 sensor with 1/1.56″ native pixels that are 1.0 mm in size and 4-in-1 binning capability is featured in the primary camera on the back of the device. In addition to supporting optical image stabilization, the f/1.88 lens has an angle of vision of 84°. The smartphone also has a 117° ultra-wide camera with an IMX858 sensor (1/2.51″, 0.7m). At a distance of 2.5 cm/1 in, this camera’s autofocus is able to shoot macro shots. The Time of Flight sensor is an additional feature.
The phone is 70% fair trade and recyclable materials, and it is built by people who are paid a fair wage. Even better, the company will recycle your old phone for you if you mail it to them in the Fairphone’s box (this is only one method the business ensures the sustainability of its products).
With a 5-year warranty and software support that lasts at least until 2031 (8 years from now), the Fairphone 5 is built to last. The phone will be supported for at least that long—ten years—if all goes as planned.
