European Super League plans to resurface after one year

The European Super League is starting to make a comeback, after plans seemed to be dormant for the breakaway tournament. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus were the only three teams left that supported the competition, and never believed the project to be dead.

They are now starting to make changes to the model and are starting to pitch the idea to the European Union to potentially replace the Champions League. Juventus director Andrea Agnelli reportedly had officials from Real Madrid and Barcelona in his house to restart the discussion about the tournament.

Aleksander Ceferin speaks out about European Super League again

The new system proposed in the European Super League involves a scheme of promotion and relegation. It also states that the teams will not be abandoning their domestic leagues either. The teams that feature in the Super League will be decided by their performance in the domestic leagues.

With the Champions League introducing a similar new format, it becomes quite difficult to see exactly how the Super League has a positive other than financial gains involved for the competing teams.

“Speaking about Super League is not speaking about football, I’m sick and tired of talking about this non-football project,” Aleksander Ceferin declared at the Football Business Summit organised by The Financial Times.

“First, they launched their nonsense of an idea in the middle of the pandemic, now we’re reading articles every day that they are planning to launch another idea now in the middle of a war.

“Do I have to speak more about these people? They honestly live in a parallel world. It’s a complete nonsense and everybody except them knows it.”
