Euro 2024 qualification through Nations League explained: Here’s how the playoffs work

The Nations League fixtures are coming to an end for the year, with the sixth matchday of the group stages about to be played out. The final four teams will be playing the semifinals next summer, and will compete for the trophy. 

The draw for the 2024 European championships is set to be held on October 9. And alongside preparation for the World Cup and the Nations League trophy itself, the competition could provide a gateway into the Euros in case a team fails to qualify. 

How can a team qualify for the Euros from the Nations League?

The overall rankings from the Nations League this season will be used to determine seeding in the Euros draw. There will be seven different pots, and the four countries that will play in the finals next year will be drawn in groups of five each. 

So, seven groups containing five teams will be drawn alongside three groups of six teams each. Germany will automatically qualify for the Euros since they host the tournament in 2024. Russia are still banned from competing under UEFA, which means that they will not be in the draw. This leaves 53 countries in the draw two weeks from now. 

Leagues A,B and C will have one of three spots to qualify, with four teams from each league that haven’t qualified competing for the opportunity. If any of the group winners have already qualified, the next best team gets their spot.
