England 2-1 Germany: Women’s Euros finally come home after AET at Wembley

England defeated Germany 2-1 after 120 minutes of intense football to earn their first major honour, winning the Women’s Euros in front of a home crowd at Wembley Stadium.

The Germans were the unlikely underdogs in the game, and only had a crowd of 3,000 to support them at Wembley. They lost Alexandra Popp to injury while warming up, and despite a valiant effort, were unable to pull off an upset in front of a record audience of 87,192.

Ella Toone gave the home side the lead shortly after the hour mark, only six minutes after coming off the bench. She was played in by a wonderful through ball from Keira Walsh, and she chipped the keeper to score the opener for her side.

Germany were calm despite going down and equalised courtesy of Lina Magull. The midfielder fired the ball into the roof of the net after turning it past Earps to level things up with ten minutes to go.

Chloe Kelly earned the winner for England with ten minutes to go in extra time, poking the ball from a corner scramble. Germany were prevented from getting out of their own half after conceding, and England rightfully earned their first major senior honour since 1966.

Less than a year in charge of the England women’s team, Sarina Wiegman has won the Euros and completed the biggest objective set out for her since she took the job.
