Elon Musk’s X to Introduce Calls Without Phone Numbers

Elon Musk, in a recent announcement, revealed an upcoming game-changing feature for X (previously known as Twitter). This innovation is set to enable X users to initiate calls with each other, transcending the need for traditional phone numbers. The scope of this feature appears to extend across a wide range of platforms, encompassing iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows devices.

All About the Elon Musk’s X New Features

Musk’s revelation, articulated through a post on the X platform itself, divulges that both video and audio calls will soon be integrated into X, with the platform assuming the role of an ‘effective global address book.’ This signifies a potential shift in the paradigm of communication, as users might be freed from the need to store and remember phone numbers. Instead, they can simply reference a user’s username to initiate a call.

X CEO Linda Yaccarino had previously confirmed the company’s intentions to introduce this feature during a discussion with CNBC earlier this month. In a revealing gesture, Andrea Conway, a designer at X, shared visuals showcasing the new video calling option positioned in the top right corner of X’s Direct Message menu. The layout appears reminiscent of Instagram’s similar features.

In addition to enhancing user experience, X is also implementing safeguards against spam calls, a welcome measure to maintain the platform’s integrity. It is speculated that certain advanced features might be reserved for premium subscribers, a strategic move that aligns with similar approaches in other platforms.

While X already offers the ‘Spaces’ feature to facilitate live conversations, it’s tailored more towards group discussions rather than one-on-one interactions. The forthcoming calling feature could address this gap, allowing users to engage in personal conversations in a streamlined manner.

The significance of this calling feature for X is underscored by its potential to differentiate the platform from competitors like Bluesky and Threads. Musk’s strategic vision seems to be converging towards transforming X into a multifaceted app similar to WeChat, offering a comprehensive suite of functionalities. However, crucial details regarding the timeline of the feature’s release and its availability, particularly in relation to Blue subscribers, remain undisclosed.
