How the Finale Actually Plays Out
After her private essay criticizing Seattle gets leaked and turns her new friend group against her, Elle flees back to LA, chasing comfort and a shot at a Cosmopolitan internship. There, mentor figure Anna St. George helps her realize she’s changed more than she expected — and that success feels hollow without the people she left behind.
So Elle turns the internship down and races back to Seattle, arriving just in time to support her friend Liz’s performance at the Winter Formal. That’s where things get messy: she runs into Dustin, their reunion turns into a charged kiss, and Miles witnesses the whole thing. Both boys walk away, leaving Elle standing alone with her love triangle completely unresolved.
Meanwhile, the season’s financial mystery wraps up cleanly — Elle helps uncover that Principal Anderson was secretly funding a mayoral candidate’s campaign through embezzled school funds, clearing her friend Donna’s name in the process.
What This Sets Up for Season 2
With Season 2 already filmed, showrunner Laura Kittrell has confirmed the new season picks up immediately after the finale, meaning fans won’t wait long to see whether Elle chooses Miles, Dustin, or neither. Elle’s parents’ rocky marriage is also expected to be a major thread going forward.
