While responding to an FTC question, a Microsoft lawyer made an Elder Scrolls 6 error, claiming that “Elder Scrolls 16” will be released in 2026. The Elder Scrolls 6 reveal trailer recently turned five years old, and fans have been waiting for any word regarding the planned sequel for the past five years.
Microsoft’s attempt to acquire Activision Blizzard has been met with opposition from the FTC, and the company has been engaged in a legal battle with the regulator since June 22 to gain approval for the deal. In a significant move, Microsoft also made headlines in 2021 with its acquisition of Bethesda, marking one of the largest video game purchases to date.
Since then, some Bethesda titles have become Xbox console exclusives, with Starfield being the most notable example. As a result, the Bethesda acquisition has been a major focus of the hearing, since it may indicate how Microsoft will respond if it acquires Activision Blizzard.
The bizarre gaffe was first reported by The Verge, which has been live-transcribing the session. Microsoft’s lawyer attempted to correct the FTC on an Elder Scrolls-related issue and ended up making their own mistake. The lawyer mentions “Elder Scrolls 16,” which is “projected for release in 2026 as a single-player game.” ‘
It’s easy to believe this lawyer was referring to The Elder Scrolls 6, which raises some intriguing concerns regarding the future game.
Phil Spencer recently stated that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be released in five years or less, and it would be remarkable for a lawyer to intentionally contradict that. With Starfield nearing completion, it was thought that The Elder Scrolls 6 would likely begin full production later this year or early next year. Even so, Bethesda would be left with little time to meet the 2026 release date. It also appears improbable that a lawyer would be privy to this information, therefore it appears to be a simple slip of the tongue for the time being.
