Big news for action-adventure fans! Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Shadow of the Tomb Raider, has been secretly developing a massive open-world action-adventure game since 2019—codenamed “Project P11″—with a 2026 release window now confirmed by insider Tom Henderson.
Table of Contents
Project P11 Details
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Project Name | P11 (internal codename) |
| Genre | Open-world action-adventure (third-person) |
| Development Team | Shadow of the Tomb Raider team |
| Development Start | 2019 (6 years in development) |
| Current Status | Gearing up for beta testing |
| Expected Release | 2026 |
| Possible Reveal | The Game Awards (speculation) |
Six Years in the Making
The project has been in development since 2019, undergoing significant changes during its lengthy production cycle. According to Henderson’s Insider Gaming podcast, conceptualization and core systems are complete, with the studio now ramping down headcount as it approaches beta—a typical sign that projects near completion.
Interestingly, Eidos Montreal has worked on 11 other projects since P11 began, highlighting the studio’s ambitious production scale. Several projects were canceled, including a Legacy of Kain revival and a Deus Ex title, but P11 survived and continues full steam ahead.
Not Tomb Raider, But What?
While the Shadow of the Tomb Raider team is leading development, this isn’t the next Tomb Raider game—Crystal Dynamics handles that franchise now. P11 remains completely unannounced, with Henderson deliberately withholding the game’s name.
Recent Layoffs Explained
Recent Eidos Montreal layoffs weren’t related to project cancellations but rather natural production scaling as P11 transitions from full development to beta preparation. The studio also suffered cuts from canceled projects including a Lord of the Rings card game with story elements.
Game Awards Announcement?
With The Game Awards just days away and beta testing imminent, many speculate P11 could receive its official reveal at the December event. However, this remains pure speculation—neither Eidos Montreal nor parent company Embracer Group has commented on the project or upcoming announcements.
The studio hasn’t released a title since 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy, making this six-year project their most ambitious undertaking yet.
