The political landscape in West Bengal was dramatically altered on Thursday as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted simultaneous searches at multiple locations linked to the prominent political consultancy firm, the Indian Political Action Committee (I–PAC), and its key functionary, Pratik Jain. The raids were reportedly part of an ongoing money laundering investigation, with sources indicating a connection to an alleged coal smuggling case.

The ED team, accompanied by central security forces, targeted the I-PAC office, situated on the 11th floor of a building in Salt Lake, and the Loudon Street residence of Pratik Jain. Mr. Jain, who is not only a co-founder of I-PAC but also the head of the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) IT cell, was reportedly present and being interrogated at his residence as the search operation unfolded.

Emerging from the residence shortly after, the Chief Minister made sharp allegations against the central agency’s motives. She claimed that the ED officials were overstepping their mandate by attempting to seize highly sensitive internal documents of the Trinamool Congress, including hard disks, mobile phones, and files containing candidate lists for upcoming elections.

In a defiant statement to the media, Ms. Banerjee questioned the agency’s role, asking if it was now the “duty of the ED to collect political party data.” She termed the entire operation as “politically motivated and unconstitutional,” asserting that she had successfully retrieved some of the party documents.
