East Bengal have advanced to the finals of the 2023 Durand Cup after defeating NorthEast United 5-4 on penalties. The Red and Gold side had to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the second half and managed to equalise in the final minute of injury time through Nandhakumar Sekhar’s header.
The Highlanders let the home team enjoy the majority of possession in the game, but were deadly on the counter attack. They were clinical in their passing and took their opportunities very well, causing the opposition defence all kinds of problems. But, they could not hold on to the lead and conceded the equaliser shortly after going a man down.
East Bengal make it to the Durand Cup 2023 finals with Kolkata derby looming
East Bengal have made it to the finals of a major tournament for the first time in the last five years. They had to endure a difficult first few years during their integration into the ISL. But now, they are finally showing signs of major improvement and have the chance to win their first trophy since becoming an ISL club.
NorthEast United were unlucky to not have won the game since they defended very well. Their midfield block prevented the hosts from conjuring any attacks down the middle. On the other hand, they were pacey and looked much sharper while going forward.
Their journey in the 2023 Durand Cup ends in the semi final, but it is a promising sign for the Highlanders ahead of the new ISL season considering their poor outing last time around.
We could have a Kolkata derby in the Durand Cup 2023 final if Mohun Bagan SG are able to beat FC Goa at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday. It will be no easy task, but the ISL winners will be the favourites heading into the game.
