EA Sports’ FIFA series is one of the most widely played franchises in the world. The football video game is beloved all across the globe, but things could be on the downward slope for the developers if their next plan gets executed.
According to findings by CBC News, EA has come up with a plan to push for its FIFA Ultimate Team to be the face of the franchise. The FUT mode is the greatest in-game revenue generator for the series, and it involves players spending real money on loot boxes that give out rewards.
An EA spokesperson claimed that CBC News had taken their findings via the documents out of context, saying, “We do not “push” people to spend in our games. Where we provide that choice, we are very careful not to promote spending over earning in the game, and the majority of FIFA players never spend money on in-game items.”
The developers have been accused of engaging in a form of gambling via their FUT mode, which provides players with loot boxes in relation with the money they spend and the element of chance. They have further gone on to say that they firmly disagree with this perception among the community.
“Regulators in multiple countries around the world have stated publicly that where there is no cash-out method, loot boxes do not constitute gambling. We take great care to ensure that our games are played as designed, including by taking action against those who violate our rules against trading outside the game,” the EA statement said.
