EA Sports, the well-known developer of the popular football-based video game FIFA, had previously secured the trademark for “EA Sports FC”. Recently, it has been officially announced that EA Sports and FIFA will not continue their partnership after the release of the recent game instalment, FIFA 23.
Consequently, FIFA 23 will be the final game released by EA Sports under the FIFA brand. Although the agreement between the two companies was extended to include the World Cup in FIFA 23, it will be the last game of the franchise to be launched. As of July 2023, EA Sports FC will be introduced to replace the football-based video game.

EA Sports FC: Reason behind the new name
Many reported that FIFA had demanded a payment of $1 billion from EA to use the FIFA license in its video game. Furthermore, FIFA wanted to restrict EA Sports’ ability to monetize the game. The article noted that EA Sports intended to explore new avenues of monetization such as “highlights of actual games, arena video game tournaments, and digital products like NFTs.”
Nevertheless, EA Sports’ partnership with FIFA differs from its other official partnerships. Losing FIFA would not result in the loss of official team and player names. The FIFA license simply grants EA Sports permission to use the World Cup name, logo, and associated rights in its game.
EA said about the new triangular design of the logo is “inspired by the triangles that have been part of EA SPORTS football for the past 30 years, from the isometric polygons that make up our game to the chemistry triangles that exist in Ultimate Team to the player indicator across every match.”

New content in-game
According to a report by BBC, the upcoming game, EA Sports FC, is expected to provide players with the ability to view live matches, participate in in-game events similar to Fortnite, and access a wider range of branded in-game items. Nevertheless, major FIFA events, including the World Cup, will not be featured in the game.

Dynamic packs
EA Sports appears to be shifting away from its current loot box system. According to reports, EA Sports FC will introduce packs with a dynamic system, whereby the chances of receiving top-tier items will gradually increase over time.
As previously announced, the pack odds in EA Sports FC will be dynamic. If players are unsuccessful in obtaining a certain item, the odds will start at a specific level and continue to rise. It remains unclear if there will be a limit on how much the odds can increase overall. Nevertheless, the increase in percentages will likely be advantageous, particularly for players who may not have the best luck.

Therefore, the loss of the partnership with FIFA is unlikely to have a significant impact on EA Sports. However, the word “FIFA” has become a household name and is often associated with soccer video games, so EA Sports may need to invest in marketing efforts to raise awareness of the new branding.
