id Software has finally given fans a deeper look into DOOM: The Dark Ages with a thrilling new trailer that introduces the Cosmic Realm, a stunning new setting for the series. Running on the PlayStation 5 Pro, the footage shines a light on the game’s impressive-looking visuals, with humans adding some personal perspective, proving that these hellish landscapes appear to be anything but traditional hellscapes found in earlier games.

The Cosmic Realm is referred to as a “Lovecraftian dimension” filled with cyclopean architecture, bizarre geometric entities, and fearsome new enemies. Noteworthy new inclusions are the gigantic flying squid-like Kaca demon and towering elite foe Cosmic Baron in a brutal encounter. These designs demonstrate a move to a darker, more terrifying aesthetic but still maintain the aggressive, push-forward combat that fans of DOOM already know.

The trailer also reveals some of the new gameplay. A standout feature is the Reaver Shot, a medieval weapon that shoots a big metal ball on a chain, which players can use to slam and whip their enemies around the battlefield. Also new to the defensive aspect of play is a shield, which gives the player the ability to parry and counter with such ferocity that enemies are overwhelmed.

Game director Hugo Martin says that the game is being internally referred to as “the best DOOM game we’ve ever made.” It’s very much a single-player experience with the kind of epic lore and depth to the gameplay of the single-player component that id Software has been known to rock hard on.
