Don’t Be Shy: Alia Bhatt Teams Up with Sister Shaheen to Tell a Story You Grow Up With

Bollywood star Alia Bhatt and her sister Shaheen Bhatt have announced their latest production venture under Eternal Sunshine Productions. The upcoming Prime Video original film titled “Don’t Be Shy” is a coming-of-age romantic comedy that explores friendship, love, and the transformative journey of growing up. The announcement was made through a playful Instagram video featuring both sisters navigating through action film scripts before selecting this heartwarming romantic comedy. This playful approach reflects their creative partnership and thoughtful process in selecting meaningful stories to produce.

About Don’t Be Shy: Plot and Characters

“Don’t Be Shy” tells the compelling story of Shyamili ‘Shy’ Das, a 20-year-old protagonist who believes she has carefully planned every aspect of her life. However, when unexpected events occur, Shy’s world spirals out of control, forcing her to confront the realities of adult relationships and personal growth.

The narrative explores how Shy must re-evaluate everything she previously believed about love, friendship, and the messy process of transitioning into adulthood. The film promises to capture the emotional complexity of youth while maintaining an entertaining and engaging tone.

Creative Team and Production Details

The film is written and directed by Sreeti Mukerji, an emerging talent in Indian cinema. Prior to “Don’t Be Shy,” Mukerji worked on the direction teams of Bollywood blockbusters including “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” and “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” The production team includes co-producers Grishma Shah and Vikesh Bhutani, while Ram Sampath provides music composition. This combination of creative talent promises to deliver a visually appealing and emotionally resonant film.

Alia Bhatt’s Vision and Eternal Sunshine Productions

Alia Bhatt, co-founder of Eternal Sunshine Productions, has consistently demonstrated her commitment to backing authentic and emotionally rich storytelling. She stated, “At Eternal Sunshine, we’ve always wanted to back stories that feel honest and voices that feel their own.” Regarding this project, she emphasized how “Don’t Be Shy” immediately resonated with the team because of its sincerity and coming-of-age lens, coupled with director Sreeti Mukerji’s passion and creative energy.

Founded in 2019, Eternal Sunshine Productions has established itself as a powerhouse for content-driven cinema. The production house previously delivered “Darlings,” a black comedy on Netflix in 2022 that earned Alia a Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actress. The company also produced “Poacher,” a Prime Video series directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Richie Mehta, which tackled wildlife conservation issues. Additionally, Eternal Sunshine co-produced “Jigra,” an action thriller that showcased the production house’s versatility in handling diverse genres.

The Partnership with Prime Video

Prime Video represents an ideal partnership for this project. Nikhil Madhok, Director and Head of Originals at Prime Video India, expressed enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt on this extremely fun yet warm romantic comedy, with a remarkable character like Shy Das at its heart.” Madhok highlighted how Alia’s instinct for emotionally rich and deeply relatable stories shines through in this coming-of-age narrative.

Alia praised Prime Video as partners who “consistently take bold creative calls and genuinely support distinctive storytelling,” describing the partnership as “a natural meeting of minds and the right place for this story to find its audience.”

Why This Story Matters: Universal Themes

“Don’t Be Shy” explores authentic representations of young adult experiences. The film’s strong female-forward narrative centered on Shy Das provides a perspective that has historically been underrepresented in coming-of-age stories. The narrative promises to address the messy, complicated reality of growing up rather than presenting an idealized version of youth. This approach aligns with evolving audience preferences, particularly among younger viewers who demand authentic storytelling.

The Significance of Alia and Shaheen’s Collaboration

The collaboration between Alia and Shaheen Bhatt represents more than just professional partnership. Shaheen Bhatt, an accomplished author known for her bestselling mental health memoir “I’ve Never Been (Un)Happier,” brings her unique perspective to the production process.

The sisters’ decision to feature their script selection process in the announcement video demonstrates their willingness to present themselves authentically to audiences and invite viewers into their creative journey.
