Disclosure Day Review: Spielberg Reaches for the Stars — and Emily Blunt Makes Sure He Gets There

Steven Spielberg returns to sci-fi with big questions, a stellar cast, and answers that don’t quite match the ambition.

Disclosure Day released in theatres on June 12, 2026, and the verdict is in — it’s a film of two halves. Magnificent in craft, uneven in delivery, but elevated throughout by performances that demand your full attention. Rating: 3/5.

Disclosure Day: Overview

What Is It About?

The film opens with Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor), a brilliant mathematician who defects from a secretive multinational firm, carrying documents that prove the existence of extraterrestrial life on Earth. On their trail is ruthless corporate chief Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), who wants the truth buried forever. A parallel storyline follows Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt), a TV meteorologist who, after an unsettling encounter with a small red bird, develops supernatural abilities — culminating in an on-air breakdown where she rapidly speaks in an unidentifiable dialect. The two protagonists eventually collide, uncovering their shared connection to the aliens.

It’s a premise that sits squarely in the tradition of science fiction film — using the extraterrestrial as a lens to examine the very human themes of power, secrecy, and systemic paranoia.

What Works

Spielberg refuses to withhold overarching mysteries, and a speeding train scene stands out as an instant classic of visual pacing. The film functions as a poignant exploration of empathy and systemic paranoia, asking whether a fractured human civilization can handle the ultimate universal truth. The emotional weight is carried effortlessly by a stellar ensemble cast.

What Doesn’t Work?

Despite the visual grandeur, the film falters in its climax — the highly anticipated cosmic reveals feel uninspired. Instead of visually delivering awe-inspiring otherworldly entities, the production leans heavily on characters delivering long, overly polished speeches about empathy and faith.

The Performances

Emily Blunt delivers an absolute powerhouse performance as Margaret, perfectly capturing the manic, terrifying evolution of a normal woman suddenly burdened with cosmic perception. Josh O’Connor provides the perfect narrative counterweight as Daniel, infusing the renegade mathematician with a determined, exhausted energy. Colin Firth delivers a deliciously cold, calculating turn as corporate antagonist Noah Scanlon, radiating menace without ever slipping into theatrical caricature.
