Netflix is officially heading back to Edinburgh. Dept. Q Season 2 has been renewed, with Matthew Goode returning as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck for another cold case. Netflix’s Tudum confirmed the renewal and also revealed that production is now underway in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The streamer framed the pickup as a return for Carl Morck and his “band of glorious misfits,” while Matthew Goode said in a statement to Netflix, “I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Dept. Q’s storylines.” He also praised creator Scott Frank and said he “cannot wait” to see what comes next.

Dept. Q Season 2 at Netflix: What’s Confirmed

Netflix has not announced a premiere date yet, but it has confirmed that filming has begun. Tudum’s update says Season 2 is in active production, and a separate cast guide reiterates that work is underway in Edinburgh.

What Season 2 Will Be About

Netflix is still keeping plot specifics fairly close to the vest, but the official Season 2 tease says Carl Morck and his team will tackle “a terrible crime hidden in the highest echelons of Scottish society.” Executive producer Rob Bullock added that it is “a story for our times,” centered on “rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law.”

That suggests the next mystery will move beyond the first season’s cold-case setup into a more politically and socially charged investigation, while still keeping the dark humor and procedural tension that defined Season 1. This final observation is an inference based on Netflix’s official description.

Returning Cast for Dept. Q Season 2

Netflix has confirmed that the core team is back. Matthew Goode returns as Carl Morck, alongside Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim, Leah Byrne as Rose Dickson, and Jamie Sives as James Hardy. Also returning are Mark Bonnar, Kate Dickie, Aaron McVeigh, and Sanjeev Kohli.

New Cast Additions

Season 2 is also expanding its world with a sizable group of newcomers. Netflix says the new additions include Aisling Franciosi, Greg Wise, Nicholas Rowe, Tony Curran, Hamish Clark, Alex Ferns, Ross Anderson, Rebecca Root, Isla Johnston, and Amy Brenneman. Tudum’s cast guide also identifies some of their character names.

Why Netflix Is Bringing It Back

Netflix’s executives Mona Qureshi and Manda Levin said Scott Frank brought “best-in-class storytelling” and that the series “thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide.” Tudum also noted that Season 1 spent six weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 after its 2025 release, which helps explain why the streamer moved ahead with another season.

For Netflix, that makes Dept. Q more than just another detective drama — it’s now one of the platform’s proven international crime titles, with a built-in audience and plenty more Jussi Adler-Olsen source material to draw from. The note about further books comes from TV Insider’s Season 2 overview, which says the series is based on Adler-Olsen’s Danish crime novels and that there are now 10 books in the series.

So yes, Dept. Q Season 2 is officially happening at Netflix, and the series is already back in production. There’s no OTT release date yet, but with Matthew Goode returning, Edinburgh once again serving as the backdrop, and a bigger cast of suspects and sleuths joining the fold, the next chapter of Carl Morck’s story is firmly on the way.
