Awards season calendars are getting crowded, and two of Netflix’s most anticipated films just lost their spot in the 2026 lineup. Here’s what’s happening with “Here Comes the Flood” and “Saturn Return,” and why the delay isn’t a red flag.
Here Comes the Flood: What’s the Holdup?
Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (The Two Popes) and written by Simon Kinberg, this unconventional heist thriller follows a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief in a nonlinear game of cons and double-crosses. Its cast is stacked: Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Danai Gurira, and Sean Harris.
The delay reportedly comes down to timing — production wrapped in New Jersey only in late January, leaving too tight a window to finish post-production for this year’s crowded fall festival slate.
Saturn Return: A Strategic Pivot, Not a Setback
From Sing Sing director Greg Kwedar and produced by Plan B, this Chicago-set romance follows three college friends across two decades, led by Charles Melton, Rachel Brosnahan, and Will Poulter. Rather than compete in the packed winter awards race, the film is reportedly aiming for a March 2027 debut at SXSW — the same festival that launched Everything Everywhere All at Once into awards history.
What’s Delayed vs. What’s Still Coming
| Title | Status | New Target |
|---|---|---|
| Here Comes the Flood | Delayed | 2027 (exact date TBA) |
| Saturn Return | Delayed | March 2027, SXSW premiere |
| Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood sequel | On track | Nov 25, 2026 (IMAX) |
| The Mosquito Bowl | On track | Late 2026 |
| La Bola Negra | On track | Late 2026 |
| Gentle Monster | On track | Late 2026 |
Why This Isn’t Cause for Concern
According to Variety, these delays reflect scheduling logistics rather than concerns about quality — Netflix’s fall calendar is already packed with major prestige titles, giving both films room to make a stronger individual impact in 2027 instead of competing for attention this winter.

The Bottom Line
Both “Here Comes the Flood” and “Saturn Return” remain high-profile, star-driven projects — they’re just trading a crowded 2026 for a cleaner shot at awards season in 2027.
