A recent incident involving the alleged demolition of a Lord Vishnu statue in Cambodia’s disputed border territory has escalated diplomatic tensions between Phnom Penh and Bangkok, while drawing a strong condemnation from India and global religious bodies. The destruction of the deity’s image, carried out by a backhoe loader and captured in widely circulated video footage, has been branded a “disrespectful act” that threatens the region’s shared civilisational heritage.

The statue, a figure of the Hindu god of preservation, was located in the sensitive An Ses area of Preah Vihear province, a region subject to a long-standing territorial conflict between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Lord Vishnu Contested Ground: An Ses Area Demolition

The demolition occurred on a Monday, amidst weeks of renewed military clashes that have reportedly led to significant casualties and displaced over a million people.

Cambodian officials have directly accused the Thai army of carrying out the act. Kim Chanpanha, a government spokesman in Preah Vihear province, confirmed the statue’s location within Cambodian territory, stating it was approximately 100 metres from the border line. Google Maps analysis, however, suggested the site was closer to 400 metres from the boundary.

Vishnu

The Vishnu statue was not an ancient ruin but a modern religious installation, constructed in 2014. Despite its recent origin, Cambodian spokesmen have firmly denounced its destruction, stating: “We condemn the destruction of ancient temples and statues that are worshipped by Buddhist and Hindu followers.”

Conflicting Claims: Security Action vs. Cultural Destruction

The Thai side has responded to the international outcry by offering a clarification that frames the demolition as a necessary security measure rather than an act of religious intent.

Key points from the Thai position include:

  • The action was purely for “area management and security” after Thai forces regained control of the territory.
  • Thai authorities asserted that the structure was not a registered religious site, built only in recent times.
  • The statue was viewed as a marker erected by Cambodian soldiers to assert sovereignty over Thai-claimed land in the disputed border region.

This explanation contrasts sharply with Cambodia’s condemnation and the ensuing international diplomatic fallout.

India Voices Strong Concern Over ‘Disrespectful Act’

The incident has reverberated far beyond Southeast Asia, prompting a formal response from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The MEA acknowledged the reports of the demolition of the Hindu deity’s image in the conflict zone.

Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson, issued a statement emphasizing the cultural significance of the deity in the region:

  • Hindu and Buddhist deities are deeply revered across the region as a “shared civilizational heritage.”
  • Such “disrespectful acts” hurt the sentiments of followers worldwide.
  • New Delhi urged both Thailand and Cambodia to de-escalate tensions and resolve their border dispute through dialogue and diplomacy to avoid further damage to heritage.

Vishnu’s Deep Roots in Cambodian History

The destruction carries particular weight due to the enduring significance of Lord Vishnu in Cambodia’s historical and religious identity. Vishnu, revered as the Preserver and Protector in the Hindu Trimurti, was a central figure during the powerful Khmer Empire.

The most famous example of this devotion is the monumental Angkor Wat temple, originally constructed in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II and dedicated to Lord Vishnu, underscoring his role as a symbol of cosmic order and stability that resonated with the Khmer monarchy. Although modern-day Cambodia is predominantly Buddhist, the reverence for Vishnu remains a vital part of its cultural tapestry, linking the recent demolition to an ancient legacy now imperiled by political conflict.
