Dead By Daylight Zombie Mode Announced for 2026 Expansion

The context behind Dead by Daylight reveals a new zombie mode currently in development, shaping how this story unfolds. Behaviour Interactive announced this exciting addition during the game’s tenth-anniversary celebrations in Montreal, officially expanding its asymmetrical horror experience.

Originally launched on June 14, 2016, for PC via Steam, the game has carved out its place in the genre across various platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. As of June 15, 2026, the studio confirmed that this ambitious project is actively in the works. However, we’re still waiting on an official release date from the development team.

Dead by Daylight: Overview of the New Zombie Mode

This new mode marks a significant shift in how players will engage with The Entity’s trials. As Thegamer reports, it moves away from the traditional hook-and-sacrifice loop that’s been a staple for years.

Instead of just hunting Survivors to satisfy the dark forces, the Killer now has a more infectious mission: turning every Survivor into a zombie using specialized powers.

Dead by Daylight: Concept and Inspiration Behind the Mode

The core concept centers on a viral infection mechanic that changes the pace of each match. By stepping away from the standard 4v1 format, the developers seem to be trying out asymmetric infection gameplay, shifting the balance of power as the match unfolds. This could offer a refreshing change for veteran players who have mastered the traditional loop over the years.

Expected Release Date and Platforms

While Behaviour Interactive gave us an early glimpse of the mode during their anniversary event, they didn’t offer a solid launch date.

Given the studio’s history with major content drops, we expect this mode to roll out with a seasonal update, likely available on all existing platforms, including current-gen consoles and mobile. We’ll keep a close eye on official channels for any roadmap updates in the coming months.

Gameplay Mechanics and Features

The mechanics of this mode add a new layer of tactical urgency to the gameplay. Survivors won’t just focus on repairing generators and evading capture; they’ll also need to manage their infection levels using vaccines scattered throughout the map. This creates a tense environment where each decision to save a teammate could lead to your own infection if you’re not careful.

Unique Zombie Behaviors and AI Design

The transformation process is key to the mode’s identity. Once a Survivor becomes fully infected, they don’t exit the game; instead, they join the ranks of the undead, actively working against their former teammates.

This AI-driven evolution introduces a level of unpredictability that the standard game often lacks. We can’t wait to see how the developers balance the strength of these zombies against the remaining healthy Survivors.

Integration with Existing Game Mechanics

Despite these changes, the game stays true to its roots. Historically, it holds a “Mostly Positive” aggregate.
