David Fincher’s American Squid Game Spin-Off Is Reportedly Dead — Here’s Why

For years, fans speculated about David Fincher bringing his signature dark precision to an American take on Squid Game. That project, long rumored under the working title Heckler, is reportedly no longer moving forward at Netflix, according to a new report from The Playlist.

What Was Reportedly Cancelled

The English-language spin-off — often referred to informally as Squid Game: America — had been rumored for years, with a possible Los Angeles production start once eyed for late 2025. That never materialized, as Fincher instead became tied up with Netflix’s untitled Cliff Booth film. Per The Playlist, the project known internally as Heckler is now officially dead.

Squid Game: Key Details From the Report

Interestingly, when Cate Blanchett appeared as an American recruiter in the Squid Game Season 3 finale, many fans assumed it was a backdoor tease for Fincher’s spin-off. The Playlist’s report clarifies she was never attached to Heckler at all.

Why Netflix Reportedly Pulled the Plug

The cancellation is reportedly tied to a broader shift in strategy — rather than betting everything on one large English-language spin-off, Netflix appears more interested in exploring smaller, market-specific adaptations. It’s a cautious approach that tracks with how some of Netflix’s biggest franchise extensions have underperformed recently, including a steep viewership drop for the Squid Game reality spin-off’s second season.

What Fincher’s Doing Instead

Fincher remains busy at Netflix. He’s currently finishing the untitled Cliff Booth film, the Brad Pitt–led follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood written by Quentin Tarantino, expected to land in theaters and on Netflix later this year. Beyond that, he has other potential projects in the pipeline, including the crime western Bitterroot.
