The Unraveling of De Gea’s Man United Journey

David De Gea’s journey at Manchester United was nothing short of legendary. Having donned the iconic red jersey for 12 years, he became a fan favorite and one of the club’s all-time greats. However, his time at the club came to an abrupt end when his contract expired during the summer of this year. Rumors swirled about a renegotiated contract with reduced pay, which De Gea agreed to, only to have the club renege on the deal, leading to his departure.

Ten Hag’s Early Doubts on David De Gea

Erik ten Hag harbored doubts about David de Gea’s suitability for Manchester United from the very beginning of his tenure as manager. However, as his first season in charge progressed, these doubts intensified to a point of no return. During his initial summer at the helm, Ten Hag made a crucial decision: he identified more pressing issues within the team than a goalkeeper with some discomfort when playing with his feet. As a result, he allocated his transfer budget to bolster other positions, including a center-back, a left-back, a midfielder, and a winger.

When Ten Hag held discussions with the football director, John Murtough, earlier this year to strategize for the summer transfer window, the prevailing sentiment was that they could continue with David de Gea as their primary goalkeeper for another season. However, a significant change of heart occurred.

De Gea’s errors in key matches against teams like Sevilla, West Ham, and in the FA Cup final against Manchester City left Ten Hag convinced that a change was imperative. Eventually, it was De Gea himself who announced his departure on July 8th. He did so, realizing that if he had chosen to stay, his role within the team would have been significantly diminished. De Gea’s social media posts were quickly followed by an official club statement from John Murtough, expressing the club’s deep respect and warm appreciation for the departing goalkeeper. However, for Ten Hag, De Gea’s departure was likely a relief.

The Ongoing Rumors

Since parting ways with Manchester United, De Gea has remained a free agent, sparking speculation about his next destination. European powerhouses like Bayern Munich and some clubs from the Saudi Pro League have been linked with the goalkeeper, but no official confirmation has emerged. Amidst the uncertainty, De Gea made a return to Manchester in the last few weeks, reuniting with his former teammates. This homecoming triggered a wave of rumors about his potential return to the Red Devils.
