As revealed in the premiere’s first three episodes, Daisy (played by Lucy Halliday) is actually working undercover for Mayday inside Gilead, after the regime murdered her parents in Toronto. TV Insider

June Osborne reveals to Daisy that Melanie and Neil — the parents she grew up with — were Mayday operatives and weren’t her biological parents, but adoptive ones who took her in after she was liberated from Gilead as a young child. TV Insider This emotional reveal pulls The Handmaid’s Tale universe directly into The Testaments.

How the Show Differs from the Book?

Element	The Book	The TV Show
Daisy’s Identity	June & Nick’s biological daughter (Nichole)	Not Nichole — a different child from Gilead
Age Gap (Agnes vs Daisy)	~10 years apart	Same age (~15–16)
Timeline	15 years after The Handmaid’s Tale novel	4 years after Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale
June’s Role	Mentioned, appears at the end	Appears early as Daisy’s Mayday handler

In the book, Daisy is actually June’s daughter Nichole — but she is not in the TV show. Creator Bruce Miller explained: “We’re definitely trying to follow the overall story of the book, but the ins and outs of the actual storyline are difficult because characters are different ages, and we had to redefine the Daisy character to keep things practical in our world.” Just Jared

Why the Change Actually Works in The Testaments?

The series reshapes the story so that Agnes and Daisy grow, struggle, and rebel together as teenagers Soapcentral — making their bond feel far more natural on screen than the book’s staggered timelines ever could. The dramatic tension hits harder when these two girls are equals navigating the same brutal world simultaneously.

Agnes and her peers are raised in affluent households and groomed to be married off to men twice their age — pouring tea, learning to embroider, and greeting each other with “May the Lord open.” Everything changes when a new peer arrives from Canada, secretly planted by the resistance to gather information on Gilead.
