Cooper Flagg on Replacing Luka Doncic: “Took a Lot of Pressure Off Me”

Replacing a generational superstar would crush most rookies. Not Cooper Flagg. The Dallas Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft addressed the elephant in the room—stepping into Luka Doncic’s shoes—with refreshing maturity. Four months after Dallas traded Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Flagg told reporters the deep roster around him actually “took a lot of that pressure off of me.” It’s a perspective that reveals why scouts believe he’s built differently.

The Pressure Question Everyone’s Asking

When reporters asked if he feels like the Mavericks’ savior following Doncic’s departure, Flagg’s response showed uncommon self-awareness: “No, not really. To me, I feel like kind of the opportunity that I was given and put into this year took a lot of that pressure off of me.”

Translation? Flagg recognizes he’s joining a stacked roster, not carrying a rebuilding franchise. With Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving (recovering from injury), P.J. Washington, Dereck Lively II, Klay Thompson, and D’Angelo Russell alongside him, expectations shift from “replace Luka” to “complement elite talent.”

The former Duke star elaborated: “We’re a really deep team, I think that takes a lot of that pressure off of me. … To just be myself and not worry about expectations to be like anybody else, but just to be me and help this team win as much as I can.”

This mindset separates franchise players from flameouts. Flagg isn’t trying to be Doncic 2.0—he’s focused on winning within his role. For more NBA rookie analysis, check our basketball prospects coverage.

Why the Doncic Trade Changed Everything

The February 2025 blockbuster sending Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis shocked the basketball world. Doncic, a five-time All-NBA selection and perennial MVP candidate, was Dallas’ franchise cornerstone. Trading him signaled a seismic shift in the Mavericks’ championship timeline.

GM Nico Harrison bet on Davis’ defensive excellence and championship pedigree over Doncic’s offensive wizardry. Four months later, landing Flagg as the draft’s top prospect validated that gamble. According to NBA.com, this trade represents one of the most consequential superstar swaps in recent history.

The pressure on Flagg could’ve been suffocating. Dallas fans watching their beloved superstar leave needed immediate hope. Instead of crumbling under expectations, Flagg reframed the narrative: he’s not Luka’s replacement—he’s part of a new championship core.

The Roster That Makes It Work

Flagg’s confidence stems from legitimate talent surrounding him:

Anthony Davis: Former champion and defensive anchor brings playoff experience and elite two-way play.

Kyrie Irving: When healthy, one of basketball’s most skilled scorers and clutch performers.

Klay Thompson: Championship pedigree and elite shooting spacing the floor for Flagg’s drives.

D’Angelo Russell: Proven scorer and playmaker who thrived in Dallas’ system.

Supporting Cast: P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively II provide defensive versatility and athleticism.

Stephen A. Smith called this Mavericks roster the “kryptonite” to the defending champion OKC Thunder. That depth allows Flagg to develop organically rather than forcing hero-ball from day one. For basketball strategy insights, visit our NBA analysis hub.

Baptism by Fire: Wembanyama Awaits

Flagg’s NBA debut couldn’t get tougher—opening night against Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs. The 7-foot-5 phenomenon entering his second season carries MVP expectations according to Carmelo Anthony and Avery Johnson.

Flagg shared his excitement about facing “The Alien”: “I’ve obviously seen tape and whatnot, but I’ve never seen him play in person, but from what the guys have told me, he’s kind of something you’ve never seen before. You can’t really understand that till you see that person.”

The matchup represents the NBA’s present meeting its future. Wembanyama established himself as a unicorn in year one; Flagg enters with similar generational hype. This opening night clash will set the tone for both players’ seasons and provide instant measuring sticks.

Why Flagg’s Mindset Matters

Top picks often fail not from lack of talent but from mental pressure. The weight of expectations, comparisons to predecessors, and immediate winning demands break many promising careers. Flagg’s approach—acknowledging the talent around him, focusing on team success over personal glory, and avoiding Doncic comparisons—suggests rare emotional intelligence.

Duke coach Jon Scheyer praised Flagg’s maturity throughout his college season. That same composure translates to how he’s handling the NBA transition. Rather than bold predictions or pressure statements, Flagg emphasizes being himself and contributing to winning. It’s championship-level thinking before playing game one.
