Cody Gakpo has been one of the standout performers in all of Europe this season. The youngster has started to wear the captain’s armband for PSV Eindhoven, and has scored 13 goals while registering 17 assists in 23 games across all competitions.

This past summer, he was on the radar of several Premier League clubs such as Leeds United, Southampton, Manchester United and Arsenal. But, a transfer didn’t materialise to any of them.

As revealed by PSV Eindhoven director Marcel Brands, Manchester United and Leeds United were considering an offer for the player. However, only the Elland Road outfit made a serious offer worth €41 million.

Of that amount, €30 million of that was to be paid upfront while €11 million was to be paid in bonuses. Interestingly, six of the instalments would only be triggered if Leeds reached the Champions League, which seems unlikely.

Manchester United, on the other hand, did not submit a formal offer for Cody Gakpo this summer. But based on his form right now, a move to England could definitely be on the cards next year.

“People said and wrote a lot about this, but no one within the organisation of PSV wanted to accept this,” Brands said.

“If United offered the money that we wanted to have for Cody, then we would’ve sold him. You can not stop him then. With bonuses we wanted to go up to €50m.”
