Clayface’s Runtime Just Made DC Movie History — Here’s Why That’s a Good Thing

Clayface is shaping up to be one of the shortest DC movies ever made — and for a body-horror film, that’s exactly the point. At just 1 hour 48 minutes, DC Studios’ first horror outing is proving that sometimes less runtime means more dread.

A Historically Short DC Clayface Film

According to a Czech distributor listing, Clayface clocks in at 108 minutes, tying it with Supergirl as the shortest film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. That places it just above Birds of Prey (109 minutes) and firmly among the leanest theatrical DC releases of all time. Only a handful of films — including the notoriously choppy Jonah Hex (81 minutes) and the 1951 Superman and the Mole Men (58 minutes) — have ever run shorter.

The film follows Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a struggling actor disfigured by a gangster who transforms into the shapeshifting monster Clayface. Director James Watkins, known for tight, tension-driven horror like Eden Lake and Speak No Evil, built his reputation on keeping runtimes lean — and that instinct is carrying over here.

Why the Short Runtime Actually Helps?

Horror thrives on restraint, and Clayface seems to be following the classic “don’t show the shark too early” rule — famously used in Jaws — by saving Hagen’s full transformation for the third act. A tighter cut also suits the film’s reported $40 million budget, since heavy CGI work on a shapeshifting villain is far easier to sustain across 108 minutes than a bloated two-hour runtime.

The character himself has a long comic-book history worth knowing, dating back decades — you can dig into the full Clayface lore on Wikipedia for context on how many versions of the villain have existed before this one.
