Chelsea extend unbeaten streak under Thomas Tuchel with 2-0 win against Newcastle

The arrival of a new manager at any club ushers the side into what seems like a complete honeymoon phase, with not a single wrong step being put. And that surely seems to be the case at Chelsea, with the first six games under Thomas Tuchel resulting in an initial draw, and five wins since.

Moreover, Timo Werner’s fortunes have also undergone a change with the German ending his 14 match goal drought last night, getting on the scoresheet against Newcastle United in a 2-0 victory at home.

The former Leipzig man finally seems to have found his footing at Stamford Bridge, and is looking more threatening than he ever has been in a Chelsea shirt now, winning the most number of penalties of any player in the history of the club in his first season alone.

Tuchel has opted for a 3-man backline, consisting of Antonio Rudiger, either one of Christensen or Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta in particular functioning as the right centre back, owing to his natural right-back position.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has been innovatively used as a wing-back, alongside a resurgence of Marcos Alonso from the depths of the squad, with Ben Chilwell and Reece James making it to the bench.

The partnership between Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic has also been revived, with Mason Mount and Timo Werner serving as the two number tens playing right behind Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud.

Tuchel fared well in his most difficult test yet, defeating Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. However, the Blues face Southampton and Manchester United in the league next, with the high-profile Champions League fixture against Atletico Madrid sandwiched between the two.
