Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton Star in APEX: Australian Wilderness Survival Story Premieres on Netflix

Netflix has unveiled the first look at APEX, an adrenaline-fueled survival thriller starring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron and Kingsman star Taron Egerton. The edge-of-your-seat thriller premieres exclusively on Netflix on April 24, 2026, promising a deadly game of cat and mouse set in the Australian wilderness.

Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, known for Everest, Adrift, and Beast, APEX brings together two of Hollywood’s most versatile action stars. Theron plays a grieving woman testing her limits in the wild, only to find herself pursued by a serial killer portrayed by Egerton in a rare villainous turn.

The film represents Netflix’s continued commitment to high-octane action thrillers, following successes like Carry-On and The Old Guard 2. With exclusive first-look images now released, anticipation is building for one of Netflix’s most intense 2026 offerings.

Plot Synopsis and Premise

APEX centers on a woman seeking solace in the remote Australian wilderness following personal tragedy. Netflix describes the film as: “A grieving woman testing her limits in the Australian wilderness is suddenly ensnared in a deadly game with a ruthless predator.”

What begins as a journey of healing quickly transforms into a desperate fight for survival when Charlize Theron’s character becomes the target of a relentless serial killer played by Taron Egerton. Industry insiders have described the thriller as “Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs.”

Set against Australia’s rugged terrain, APEX utilizes the harsh environment as both setting and adversary. The wilderness becomes an additional character, with mountains, cliffs, and remote locations providing spectacular visuals and genuine danger.

The film also stars Eric Bana as Tommy, Theron’s onscreen partner, reuniting him with Theron after more than 20 years of near-misses on various projects.

Charlize Theron’s Intense Physical Preparation

Charlize Theron has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most committed action stars, from Mad Max: Fury Road to The Old Guard franchise. For APEX, she took her physical dedication to unprecedented levels.

In an exclusive interview with People Magazine, Theron revealed the extreme nature of her preparation: “I was climbing a lot. I was climbing pretty much every day. And when I got to Australia I was kayaking a lot. I wanted to get as strong as possible because I was climbing all the mountains in the film.”

The most shocking revelation: Theron performed climbing stunts barefoot on raw feet. “I’m climbing all of it—and I’m climbing it barefoot on my own raw feet,” she explained, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to authentic performances.

Before APEX, Theron had only climbed as a child in Africa. Her rigorous daily training included extensive rock climbing practice, kayaking for core strength, and overall conditioning to handle the Australian wilderness.

Director Baltasar Kormákur praised Theron’s transformation: “We decided not to take any shortcuts and just dig in and go through it, and she certainly did. It was fascinating seeing Charlize transform and take on the different challenges that the role required.“

Taron Egerton’s Villainous Turn

While Charlize Theron pushes her physical limits as the hunted protagonist, Taron Egerton embraces a rare villainous role as the ruthless serial killer pursuing her through the wilderness. Known primarily for heroic roles in the Kingsman franchise and dramatic performances in films like Rocketman, Egerton’s turn as the antagonist marks a significant departure.

Exclusive first-look images show Egerton sporting a shaved head and wielding a crossbow, presenting a menacing presence far removed from his typically charming screen persona. “I was very excited by not having to worry about what my hair looked like every day,” Egerton joked about the new grooming regime that came with playing the villain.

The casting represents a calculated risk that showcases Egerton’s range as an actor. His recent success in Netflix’s Carry-On—which became the streaming platform’s third-most popular English-language movie of all time—demonstrates his ability to carry action thrillers and suggests APEX could benefit from similar audience enthusiasm.

Eric Bana and Director Kormákur’s Vision

Eric Bana rounds out the cast as Tommy, Theron’s onscreen partner. “I have been trying to work with Eric for over 20 years,” Theron revealed to People Magazine. “We have literally circled each other on projects and it’s just never worked out, so this was kind of a no-brainer… He’s amazing in the film.”

Baltasar Kormákur brings extensive experience crafting survival thrillers like Everest and Adrift. He expressed his excitement: “I couldn’t be more excited. Working in the rugged, beautiful terrains of Australia with three of the world’s most talented, dedicated actors in Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana is such a joy—even as I put them through the [ringer] in this unique survivor story.”

Kormákur’s no-shortcuts approach meant filming in genuinely remote Australian locations, often requiring the cast and crew to hike into difficult terrain. The production was filmed throughout Australia’s most spectacular wilderness areas, providing breathtaking cinematography and genuine obstacles.

Netflix’s Action Thriller Strategy

APEX continues Netflix’s successful strategy of producing star-driven action thrillers. The streaming platform has found success with this genre through hits like Carry-On and The Old Guard franchise.

Charlize Theron has become a reliable Netflix presence, with The Old Guard 2 releasing this past summer. Taron Egerton’s involvement represents smart casting following his breakout success with Carry-On—the third-most popular English-language movie in Netflix history.

The April 24, 2026 premiere date positions APEX strategically in Netflix’s release calendar, capitalizing on spring viewing habits.

Production Team and Visual Style

People Magazine’s exclusive first-look images showcase Theron scaling steep cliffs barefoot, highlighting the film’s commitment to practical stunts. Additional images show Egerton’s menacing shaved-head look with crossbow, creating immediate visual tension.

The cinematography captures Australia’s natural beauty while emphasizing the harsh wilderness setting. Dramatic lighting suggests a film balancing spectacular action with psychological tension.

APEX is produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, Ian Bryce, Charlize Theron, Beth Kono, and A.J. Dix, with Kormákur also serving as producer. Executive producers include Ray Angelic, Will McCance, and Dawn Olmstead. Theron’s role as producer demonstrates her comprehensive involvement beyond her starring performance.
