A population of 525,000 people. Zero previous World Cup appearances. Three draws. One place in football’s last 32. Cape Verde’s debut at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has produced the most heartwarming underdog story of the entire tournament — and they’re not done yet.

0-0 With Saudi Arabia. That Was All They Needed.
The island nation off the western coast of Africa became the smallest country by population to ever make the knockout stage of a men’s World Cup after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in their group stage finale in Houston on Friday.
Cape Verde knew if things went their way in the final matches, they could go straight through to the knockouts — and the result in Houston coupled with Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay saw them finish as runners-up behind La Roja, with three points from three draws.

Vozinha — The 40-Year-Old Hero Keeps Delivering
Vozinha made three crucial saves against Saudi Arabia — in first-half stoppage time, the 66th minute, and the 92nd minute — his mother Ana Candida Evora watching from a luxury suite in the crowd of 68,278, waving a tiny Cape Verde flag.
“We are small,” said the 40-year-old goalkeeper. “But we have big hearts and we are fighters.”
Argentina Await. Nobody Is Scared.
Cape Verde’s population of 525,000 is smaller than all 50 U.S. states — with Wyoming the closest at 576,000. And yet, on July 3 in Miami, the Blue Sharks will face defending champions Argentina — the greatest team on the planet, featuring Lionel Messi in what could be his final World Cup match.
Cape Verde midfielder Deroy Duarte said it best: “Honestly, it’s mad. I feel like I’m in a dream. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always dreamed of playing in a World Cup.”
