Bullitt Screenwriter Alan Trustman Dies at 95, Leaving Behind a Cinematic Legacy

Alan Trustman, the screenwriter behind Bullitt, has died at 95. He shaped modern action thrillers through his groundbreaking work on the 1968 classic starring Steve McQueen. His decades-long career produced scripts that defined crime dramas and influenced filmmakers for generations to come.

Here’s What Happened

Alan Trustman died on March 6, 2026, at age 95. He’s best known for writing Bullitt, the 1968 crime thriller that changed action cinema forever with its groundbreaking car chase. Trustman didn’t just write dialogue—he built narratives around visual storytelling.

His other major credits include The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and Jigsaw (1968), both of which proved his mastery of heist and crime stories. What made Trustman special was how he combined character-driven plots with kinetic energy, setting the standard for everything that came after.

The Real Impact

Trustman’s real gift was his screenwriting craft. His approach to pacing and dialogue became a template other writers followed. His scripts weren’t just functional—they showed filmmakers how to build tension into every single scene.

Here’s the thing: Trustman predated all those formulaic action templates from the 1980s. Instead, he explored morality and consequence in ways that felt fresh. Modern screenwriters, especially those working in prestige TV, point to his work when they talk about authentic characters in high-stakes situations.

Key Details

Born in 1930, Trustman had a career that spanned more than five decades. Bullitt featured an iconic 11-minute car chase through San Francisco streets. That sequence cost about $750,000 to film back then—roughly $6.5 million in today’s money.

The film pulled in $42.3 million at the box office, making it a huge hit. Trustman earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for The Thomas Crown Affair, which solidified his place among Hollywood’s top writers.

Voices from the Industry

Directors and screenwriters have been sharing tributes since his death. Many studied Bullitt to understand how Trustman structured action sequences. They talk about how he balanced character work with explosive set pieces—something that’s still hard to pull off today.

His peers describe a writer who knew that great action cinema needs emotional weight. Spectacle alone doesn’t work. You need stakes.
