What Happened and Why Was It Cancelled?

Hulu officially announced it would not move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale. Gellar broke the news to fans on Instagram, saying she was “really sad” to share the news. Wikipedia

After a pilot was filmed, sources described the first version as “not perfect.” The writers did a major rewrite — a 90-minute, more adult script with significantly more of Gellar’s Buffy, which was reportedly well-received at both 20th Television and Searchlight Television, with a pickup considered “imminent.” Nobody expected the pass.

The timing made the blow even harder. Gellar received the cancellation call right before taking the stage at SXSW for the Ready or Not 2 premiere — the same weekend director Chloé Zhao attended the Oscars as a Best Director nominee for Hamnet. screenrant

The Executive Who Killed Buffy

Gellar did not stay silent about the behind-the-scenes battle. She told People: “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him. That’s very hard when you’re taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy.” Fox News

While Gellar declined to name the executive, multiple sources confirmed the decision-maker was Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich.

Is the Buffy Door Fully Closed?

Not entirely. A source close to the show stated there is a “lot of love” for Buffy at the streamer, and that the door is still open for future iterations of the IP. Wikipedia However, because Disney owns the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise, it cannot be developed anywhere else.
