Broadcom Inc. has formalized a 10-year agreement with Japanese telecommunications giant NTT DOCOMO to significantly enhance the latter’s private cloud infrastructure. The collaboration, which builds on a seven-year partnership, aims to bolster service continuity, cybersecurity measures, and the expedited delivery of new digital services for DOCOMO customers.

Broadcom

The long-term pact represents Broadcom Japan’s inaugural 10-year comprehensive agreement for VMware software products, including licensing, technical assistance, and maintenance support. The core of this initiative is the deployment and optimization of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), which will form the backbone of DOCOMO’s digital service operations for the coming decade.

This strategic alliance is designed to equip DOCOMO with robust infrastructure capable of navigating a dynamic business environment, marked by the expanding integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the increasing sophistication of cyber threats. Broadcom’s technology and engineering resources will integrate with DOCOMO’s operational expertise in large-scale infrastructure to target three primary areas of enhancement:

Broadcom Continuous Service Availability

Leveraging VCF, DOCOMO plans to strengthen its capabilities for rapid system upgrades and maintenance without disrupting services. The unified management of servers, storage, and networking is expected to facilitate flexible capacity expansion, supporting future service growth. Automated resource placement and scaling based on usage are also intended to maintain stable service quality, even during peak traffic periods. The agreement includes VCF Forte Support, Broadcom’s premium service-level objectives (SLOs), to ensure sustained system operations.

Proactive Security and Resilience

To counter evolving cyber threats, including those driven by AI, DOCOMO will implement enhanced, continuous security measures. VCF capabilities will enable timely patching and predictive anomaly detection across the system. This, combined with AIOps initiatives, aims to facilitate early detection and rapid response to security incidents. Dedicated Support Account Managers (SAMs) and Technical Account Managers (TAMs) will further assist DOCOMO in adopting the latest technologies and security protocols, aligning with broader industry developments (https://technosports.co.in/).

Accelerated Service Delivery

The integration of VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS), the native VCF Kubernetes runtime, will enable DOCOMO to operate virtual machines and containers on a unified platform. This standardization, coupled with development and operations automation, is projected to streamline processes from environment provisioning to service delivery. Automating development, testing, and release cycles is expected to shorten the time-to-market for new services and features, allowing DOCOMO to respond swiftly to evolving customer demands and market shifts.

Moving forward, the partnership anticipates the evolution of DOCOMO’s service infrastructure into a next-generation platform that integrates virtual machines, containers, and AI workloads. Both companies plan to jointly advance AI-driven operations and automation, expecting further improvements in service quality and delivery speed. Broadcom will also collaborate with DOCOMO to ensure the infrastructure can flexibly adopt new technologies in anticipation of future shifts, such as the expanded use of AI, 6G, and the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) initiative.

Hiroshi Ishimaru, General Manager of Service Design Department at NTT DOCOMO, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure for stability, security, and responsiveness to market changes. “Through this long-term comprehensive agreement, we will further strengthen our technical collaboration with roadcom Inc. (https://www.broadcom.com/),” Ishimaru stated. “We aim to build a service infrastructure that delivers new value to customers more quickly and reliably, with an eye toward future technological advances such as the expanding use of AI.”

Paul Turner, Chief Product Officer for the VMware Cloud Foundation Division at Broadcom, acknowledged the significance of the partnership. “This agreement takes that relationship further, reflecting our shared commitment to continuously enhancing DOCOMO’s service infrastructure over the long term,” Turner commented. “With VMware Cloud Foundation at the core, Broadcom will provide a private cloud platform that runs virtual machines, containers, and AI workloads on a common foundation.”
